Should I use a bubble jet or laser printer?
Bubble jet printers have little jets that squirt ink out on the paper to form the letters on the page. These printers are faster then the dot matrix printers and give better quality. The cost of these are very reasonable. Most bubble jet printers also have color capabilities. The drawbacks are speed, the ink can sometimes smudge, and the cost per page can be high depending on the cost of the replacement ink cartridges.

Laser printers are the fastest and give the best quality. These work by heating up the paper where the letters are to be made. Toner dust is then spread on the page and sticks to the heated area. The remaining toner is wiped off and then the page goes through a fuser which seals the toner permanently on to the page. The only drawback is that they can only produce black and white images unless you buy expensive color equipment and the cost is more then the bubble jet. Most offices will find the laser printer the best option for business applications.

Why do my other programs print fine but I am having a problem printing?
Our products are written in FileMaker®. This programming language works well for our program. It gives it the speed to search large amounts of data quickly. You probably do not have any other program that uses FileMaker. Let us explain how a printer works. The first step is that the Windows based program (our software) sends a file to be printed to the actual Windows Operating System. Windows then starts up the printer and sends the file to it to be printed. In-between Windows and the printer is a piece of software called the print driver. This print driver reads the file and converts it into the printers language and proceeds to print out. The problem arises when the print driver does not translate the file properly. This leads to the file not printing out properly. The most common errors cause the spacing, fonts, etc. on the page to be incorrect. The sever errors can cause crashes. We have yet to be unable to resolve print problems if you follow the below suggestions and are still stuck call technical support.

Here is the order of suggested fixes for Windows 95, 98, ME, NT and 2000.

Try the solutions until your problem is solved. Each time you preform a step restarts, the machine and try to print in the software.

A. Obtain the most recent version of the printer driver from the manufacturer, and install the latest version. Reinstalling the original printer drivers will not work. Keep in mind that the newest version may still have issues. This solves 99.9% of all print driver problems.

B. Change the printer driver
To do initial testing:
1. Delete the suspect printer driver(s). Choose Start Menu, then settings, then printers. Right click on printer then choose delete.
2. To install a print driver choose Start Menu, then settings, then printers. Double click on Add Printer Icon then install a ‘known good’ compatible printer driver, i.e., use the HP LaserJet 4 when replacing the HP LaserJet 5. Note: It must be set as the default printer.
3. Exit Windows, or “Shut down”, then start up again. If this resolves the problem then it was related to the printer driver you deleted.

Compatible printer drivers:
Use the following list as a guide for compatible printer drivers. If your printer is not on the list, check with the manufacturer of your printer, search on their web site, or look in the printers manual for a list of compatible printer drivers. In lieu of an official list of substitutes, try using similar printer drivers. As a test you can always follow the directions above using the HP LaserJet 4, if the error disappears you know your printer driver was problematic.
